One Kind Word Can Warm Three Winter Months - Japanese Proverb
You ever have anyone say something offhand that has a big effect on you? I certainly have. Like when a co-worker commented on my ‘super straight hair’ and I stopped straightening it so diligently each morning. Or when a friend called me a ‘big girl like her’, spurring me to get my ass on a treadmill. Or even friends and family ‘liking’ status updates and photos on Facebook and the irrational but real sense of affirmation that brings. Sometimes we have no idea how strongly our words, stories or even social media presence can impact people.
Today I had one of those moments. A coworker/friend mentioned casually how age 28 was hard for her with friends moving away, loved ones making big changes, knowing that goals hadn’t been reached and how it could be a very difficult and sometimes lonely time. Her short and fleeting comment provided me more comfort than she will likely ever know. Not to say there hasn’t been a lot of good in my life lately, but things have been a little bumpy and knowing that someone else has been there and made it to the other side successfully is profoundly encouraging.
I only hope that I might be able to impart a similar feeling of comfort to someone else unknowingly in need of a little boost.
